Vietnam 5G Expansion: Huawei & ZTE Deals Amid Global Tensions
bmw | Nov. 30, 2025
In today’s world, technology and politics are advancing hand in hand. The development of mobile networks, especially 5G technology, has become more than just a matter of speed or convenience; it now plays a crucial role in economic strategy and national security. Recently, Chinese telecom giants Huawei and ZTE have secured significant contracts to supply 5G equipment in Vietnam, making headlines in the global market.
Vietnam had traditionally been cautious about adopting Chinese technology in critical infrastructure. However, in recent years, following U.S. tariffs on Vietnamese goods and warming ties between Vietnam and China, Hanoi has shown a willingness to engage with Chinese vendors. In this context, a Huawei-affiliated consortium secured a contract worth approximately US $23 million, while ZTE won at least two contracts valued at over US $20 million combined. Together, these agreements represent more than US $43 million in 5G equipment supply.
Vietnam’s national mobile operators plan to expand their 5G networks significantly, creating a strong demand for cost-effective and fast deployment. Chinese suppliers like Huawei and ZTE provide affordable alternatives compared to Western vendors, which explains their selection. However, the core network infrastructure remains under the responsibility of Western companies such as Ericsson, Nokia, and Qualcomm. This indicates that Vietnam is adopting a mixed-vendor approach, balancing cost, speed, and security.
Despite the advantages, deals with Chinese vendors have raised security concerns among Western countries. Several nations have already restricted Huawei and ZTE from participating in their national networks due to potential cyber threats. The growing presence of Chinese equipment in Vietnam’s 5G infrastructure could create vulnerabilities, highlighting the need for vigilant oversight and robust security measures.
For developing countries like Nepal, the Vietnam example offers valuable lessons. Affordable Chinese equipment can accelerate and reduce the cost of 5G rollout, but ensuring the security of the core network and sensitive data requires certified equipment and monitoring systems from trusted vendors. By adopting a mixed approach, countries can achieve a balance between technological advancement, economic efficiency, and national security.
Ultimately, the Huawei and ZTE 5G deals in Vietnam represent more than a business transaction. They illustrate the intersection of global politics, security, and technology. This case demonstrates that 5G is no longer merely about internet speed; it has become a key factor in national strategy, economic planning, and international relations.
