Sony PS5 to Get AI Frame Generation — But Not in 2026
bigsansar | March 22, 2026
The gaming industry continues to evolve rapidly, and Sony is once again at the center of attention. Recent discussions suggest that the company is exploring machine learning (ML)-based frame generation technology for its PlayStation ecosystem. This has sparked significant interest among PlayStation 5 users and gaming enthusiasts worldwide.
At its core, ML-based frame generation is a technique that uses artificial intelligence to create additional frames between rendered ones. The result is a smoother and more responsive gameplay experience, even when hardware limitations exist.
This technology is already well-established in the PC gaming space. For instance, NVIDIA utilizes it in DLSS (Deep Learning Super Sampling), while AMD offers similar capabilities through FSR (FidelityFX Super Resolution).
Important: Sony has not officially confirmed a DLSS-like frame generation feature for PlayStation consoles. However, technical presentations and engineering insights indicate that the company is actively working on machine learning–driven rendering and upscaling techniques.
The relevance of this technology becomes clear when considering the growing demands of modern games. Although the PlayStation 5 remains a powerful console, today’s AAA titles increasingly push hardware limits. Features such as 4K resolution and ray tracing require substantial processing power.
If implemented, ML-based frame generation could offer:
- Improved perceived frame rates without new hardware
- Smoother gameplay experiences
- Enhanced visual quality
- Extended console lifespan
Despite its potential, the feature is unlikely to arrive in the near term.
Key reasons include:
- The complexity of integrating ML at the console level
- The need for deep optimization between hardware and software
- Additional time is required for developers to adapt their games
- The challenge of training and deploying stable ML models
Based on current information, this technology is unlikely to be released in 2026. Instead, it may appear in a future PlayStation update or be fully realized in the next-generation console.
Looking ahead, this development highlights a broader trend: artificial intelligence is becoming a central component of gaming technology. If Sony successfully implements ML-based rendering, it could significantly narrow the gap between console and PC gaming performance.
In conclusion, while PlayStation 5 users may not see this feature immediately, the long-term impact could be transformative. Sony’s investment in machine learning signals a future where gaming experiences are not only more visually advanced but also significantly more efficient.
